David Lean's Oscar-winning account of EM Forster's novel sees Judy Davis playing a young Englishwoman who goes to 1920s India with her fiancé's mother (Peggy Ashcroft). Dazed and confused, she brings a charge of rape against a friendly young Indian doctor (Victor Banerjee). Lean's last movie proves to be one of his best with Alec Guinness offering typically splendid support and Dame Peggy deservedly winning an Oscar.
